This year’s convention was bookended by two independent, doll-related events
- a Betsy McCall Dinner on the day before the official start of the convention,
and the Madame Alexander Friendship Luncheon on the day after. |
| |
Official events began with the "Yahoo! Texas Topper" breakfast and
included the largest number of meal events for a Modern Doll Collector’s
Convention® to date, with three dinners, three luncheons, three breakfasts and
two teas, plus the opening mixer. The breakfast featured a T-shirt exchange and a
"Texas Topper" hat competition, where applause awarded Nancy
Vancas top prize.

During the Opening Mixer, hosted by Vogue Dolls, Inc.
which unveiled two dolls - a "Davey at
the Alamo" and a Mini-Ginny as "Legend of the Bluebonnet" - the President of
Vogue Dolls, Linda Smith, was presented with this year’s "Cathie Lifetime
Achievement Award."
The final event of the day was the Alexander Lissy
dinner, which presented Madame Alexander’s first-ever Native-American Cissy, "Indian Princess Cissy", as
well as a Lissy "Yellow Rose of Texas" doll and a set of two Cisettes
as a companion.

Thursday was the only day that did not feature a Breakfast. The first event of the day was a Luncheon
hosted by Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls, which introduced "Pedro" and
"Isabel", the first of their new Dolls of the World line. A tea,
hosted by Berdine Creedy, followed this, presenting her "Victoria"
doll.
This was followed by the D.A.E. Originals banquet, featuring a
centerpiece of their Vivian the Miniquin as "Night Life in
Pink,"
who wore a black, white and pink gown and stood atop a rotating,
mirrored stand, as well as Vivian as "La Vie En Rose" - wearing a
flamboyant pink dress - as the souvenir, with her companion, Monty,
"Le Bal" dressed in a black-and-gold tuxedo.
The day ended with the
Runway portion of the Fashion Doll Runway event. The results of this competition can be found here. Several attendees -
including the webmaster himself -
escorted these lovely ladies around the room for the crowd and the judges to
examine in detail. |

Friday began with the Käthe Kruse breakfast, which introduced "Isabella"
their Fiesta Girl, and her friend, "Gretchen" an Alpine Cowgirl.
During this, Don Jensen gave a parallel presentation, "THE VINYL YEARS: Horsman's Dolls from 1950 to the Present", discussing Horsman Dolls (who did not have an event this year),
and featuring their Rini doll - both doll and the presentation were well recieved.
At lunch time, Boneka
took the Indian theme in a different direction. After discovering that the San
Antonio region has a fair-sized population of East Indian immigrants, they used that as
the basis for "Lalita" and a male doll in a white outfit as her
companion doll, while the centerpiece featured a trunk of clothing for both -
and the entertainment included a troupe of Indian girls trained in traditional
Indian dances who performed for the attendees.
The day also featured the Bella! Productions High Tea, where much history of Sara Bernhardt was discussed,
as well as some history on Clea Bella Dolls and the company itself; the souvenir was a "Gismonda"
outfit, based on one of Ms. Bernhardt’s plays, while the centerpiece featured
Clea as the famous actress, wearing an outfit derived from her play Ruy Blas,
and an ornate wooden sofa was offered as a Companion piece.
Kish & Company
hosted the day’s dinner, introducing "Mariposa" and her Companion,
two of their first dolls featuring jointed knees and elbows. |
As usual, this year's convention also featured a Competition room, |
 |
with an adjacent room showcasing the history of the Ginny Vogue doll, |
 |
our Helper room - which presented almost 200 Helper items - the largest number for any Modern Doll Collector's Convention® to date! | |
- and our salesroom. |
 |
This year also featured several seminars and workshops, including Denis Bastien's "Dolly Rodeo" Seminar, |
| |
 |
Summer Zilles and Nancy Hoel's "Mexico Bound" Seminar, |
|
Lauren Welker's "Fashion Fiesta" workshop, and too many others to list here. |
| |
Saturday began with the Maggie Made Breakfast - a Maggie Iacono event which sold out
within fifteen minutes of registration opening! They presented a fun DVD and
a souvenir doll named "Jenna" as well as "Geena", the lovely centerpiece.
Heidi Pluszcok hosted the day’s luncheon, which presented
"Louise" and "Hermine," two dolls with a history
intertwined with that of San Antonio itself.
The day - and convention - formally concluded with the Tonner Banquet, presenting "Kassie" and "Cole",
the stars of a Modern Romance story discovered during the planning of the
convention, and available for download from our Yahoo! Group’s Files
section.
