Modern Doll Collectors Convention

Modern Doll Collectors Convention® 2008

2008 Fashion Doll Runway

The Invitation

For our second Annual Fashion Doll Runway Charity Event, Modern Doll Inc., extends an invitation to all designers worldwide.
You do not have to attend the convention to enter.
This year’s charity is the Spina Bifida Unit of Shriners’ Hospital (Tampa).
We invite you to submit your design for our 16" Tonner fashion doll challenge.
You will need to send us the fashion so that we may photograph it on a 16" Tonner doll for online voting. Your fashion will also be walked before our panel of judges at the Fashion Doll Runway on Thursday evening.
The photographs of your fashion will be featured on our website and we will vote online for the most popular costume.
The costumes will be dressed on the dolls used for Thursday's runway and auctioned off for the charity at our convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel on September 27th, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Challenge:

Design a three-piece costume that is mix and match to fit a 16-inch Tonner fashion doll such as Sydney or Tyler.
The costume can be for day or evening. All extra pieces should be used to change the look of the basic costume.
This costume should say who you are as a designer.
You should also send a short paragraph of 500 words or less describing who will wear your costume and where she will wear it.

The Rules:

  1. The costume must be an original design, created by you.

  2. You will need to send an e-mail to runway@moderndollcollectors.com and include the following:

    • Your name

    • The name of your costume, if any
    • A photo of yourself
    • A short bio - no more than 500 words long
    • Your age (don't worry, we won't tell anyone - you may just answer "Over 18" or "18 or younger" if you prefer)
    • Your mailing address
    • A brief explanation of why you chose this costume. This will give our online voters a chance to know more about you and what you are doing.

Optionally, if you are familiar with YouTube, you may also submit a video to give us more information about you, your design and what you want to create - if you do this, include a link to the video in your e-mail.
Note: If you submit a video, you need include your name, your costume's name (if any) and your mailing address with the video.

  3. Your costume only will be judged for originality, technique, fabric choice, design, fit and sewing expertise. Only the costume will be judged, not the doll, accessories, pattern or any video submitted.

  4. You may use any shoes or accessories of your choice; these do not have to be made by the designer.
You will be judged on how well you accessorize your costume, but not on the accessories themselves.

  5. You will need to submit your costume so that it can be photographed being modeled by a 16" Tonner doll.

The costumes must be received by August 1st 2008.
The earlier we receive them, the better, as they will be posted to our Fashion Doll Runway website and earlier submissions attract a larger response for online voting.

You must also submit patterns for your costume.
The patterns may be rough drafts with some basic sewing instructions.
Details and finishing for the pattern may be added later as needed, as the top three winners will have their patterns submitted to Dolls Magazine for possible publication. Email moddoll@yahoo.com if you have questions.

How it Works

Please mail your costume to

Modern Doll Collectors Convention®
PO Box 311
Deming, NM 88031

so that it arrives no later than August 1st, 2008
Costumes must be received by that time to count in the contest and so we can photograph them on the 16" Tonner fashion doll.

Make sure to include your name and the name of your costume with your submission, as well as your return address.

Preliminary judges skilled in sewing and pattern making will choose twelve costumes.
The top twelve costumes will make it to the Fashion Doll Runway.
Please submit a self-addressed stamped envelope with your costume so that if it is not chosen for the top twelve, it can be returned to you as quickly as possible.

Your costume will be dressed on a Tonner doll at the convention and then it will walk the runway, either with you if you attend, or with a volunteer if you cannot.
The Fashion Doll Runway event will be held on Thursday evening following the Tonner Dinner.
A team of qualified judges selected by Modern Doll, Inc. will judge the Fashion Doll Runway.
The dressed doll will be auctioned off live at our Saturday night banquet, with all proceeds going to the Spina Bifida Unit of Shriners’ Hospital

Prizes:

The top three winners will receive a doll donated by the Tonner Doll Company and may have their patterns printed in Dolls Magazine.
The online most popular costume winner will also receive a doll donated by Modern Doll, Inc.

We thank you for sharing your design and sewing expertise with our group and for making a donation to the Spina Bifida Unit of Shriner’s Hospital.
This was really a fun project for the first year (2007) and everyone enjoyed seeing the 2007 costumes on line and in the runway presentation and voting for their favorite online.
