Pre-Convention Tours – San Antonio
This year we have the opportunity to take advantage of the variety of tours offered by
Alamo Sightseeing Tours. Their tour office is right across the
street from the Alamo at 321 Alamo Plaza (next to Del Sol). Whether you want all-day or half-day adventures or to
see the ‘Best of San Antonio’ on a trolley, there are sights to be seen.
All tours will be specially priced for convention attendees.
Additional trolley arrangements have been made with The Alamo Trolley
whose tour office is in the Alamo Visitors Center at The Menger Hotel. They are offering us a ‘special discount coupon’
for their Adult 60 Minute Tour, or Adult 60 Minute Tour with Hop Pass.
Tuesday, September 13, 2011 is declared ‘Tour Day’, but special pricing from both tour companies will be effective for
tours starting Sunday, September 11, through Tuesday. September 20. Plenty of time to see it all!!

"Ancient Recipes – Modern Delights: Historic King William District"
Wednesday, September 14, 2011 - 8:00 AM–12:00 PM - Cost: $55.00
Min 20, max 27 people
Activity Level: low level walking & stairs. No elevator at Guenther House or Steves Homestead.
Ticket Price Includes: Certified tour guide, air-conditioned motor coach, bottled water, FFE Texas
staff and any and all applicable taxes, entry, gratuities and coordination/management fees. Breakfast will be paid
for individually.
Breakfast at The Guenther House will tantalize our taste buds with perhaps Guenther’s favorite breakfast platter or one of the
other delights made from flour illed at the Pioneer Flour Mill.
After breakfast we’ll take a tour of The Guenther House. Founder of the Pioneer Flour Mill, Carl Guenther, raised his large family
in this old limestone house with stairs leading to multiple levels. Shopping in the River House Gift Shop will fill
shopping bags with everything from Mill products with accompanying recipes to coat hooks and cooking utensils. We then
walk thru the King William district that has the distinction of being what may be the only neighborhood association in
the entire state with three historic districts within its boundaries, including the state’s oldest district created
by city ordinance and two districts recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. All three districts are
equally protected by city ordinances and share a common theme of historical and cultural importance. We will tour one
of the fine houses and learn about its rich history.
The walking tour will culminate with a docent tour of the "Steves Homestead" the most popular house in the
King William Neighborhood.
Our next stop that bridges the past with the future is referred to as the "Pearl District" which is
undergoing a transformation from historic brewery to an iconic culinary and cultural gathering place where you can eat,
live, learn, work and play on the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River. You might want to stop at the Culinary
Institute for a fresh pastry or a fresh handmade taco from La Gloria’s as you stroll along the Riverwalk or browse
the many unique shops and Aveda Institute onsite.
